July was an exciting month for AMKFSC Community Services, where we had the privilege to co-organize and hosted the 19th International Consortium of Social Development (ICSD) Symposium, held in Singapore from 7th to 10th July 2015.
We saw a gathering of more than 400 delegates who came from 28 countries coming together to learn and exchange ideas of best practices in Community Leadership and Social Development from around the world. Among the distinguished guest and speakers were Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Dr Noeleen Heyzer, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Professor Michael Sherraden, from Washington University, Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Community, Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr David N Jones, Past President, IFSW, Professor Mariko Kimura, Regional President, International Federation of Social Work Asia Pacific Region as well as Dr Barbara Shank, President of ICSD.
In the symposium, AMKFSC presented papers to share about our Bakery Hearts, Transition Plus and COMNET Senior Service in Sengkang programs. We also had a booth at the conference to showcase our services.
On the final day of the conference, AMKFSC hosted two groups of delegates who visited our Cheng San Family Service Centre, Punggol Family Service Centre, Bakery Hearts Kitchen as well as our Transition Plus Program at the Interim Rental Housing. Our Social Workers from Ang Mo Kio and Cheng San Family Service Centre also ended the conference by conducted an experiential interactive workshop on Community based Child Centric Social Work Practice.
Many of the symposium participants exclaimed that they found the experiences and learning shared to be enriching and relevant for implementation in their own countries.
