Visit to the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N.

Thanks to the volunteers from Singapore Power, more than 80 children from our BASIC Student Care Centres (Ang Mo Kio and Cheng San) and Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre under AMKFSC had the opportunity to be “enlisted” as agents at the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N., an exhibition on Marvel superheroes such as Ironman, Captain America and Thor, held at the Science Centre Singapore.

“My favorite characters … number 1 is Captain America, number 2 is Thor. Scarlet Witch is third!” a 10-year-old girl shared excitedly with the volunteer who was tagged to her for the day.

Before they entered the exhibition, the children were each given an iPod, on which they were supposed to complete various tasks. The volunteers actively befriended and helped the children out when they had problems with the devices and tasks. The games and costumes at the exhibition left the children in awe. But they were most eager to find out if they were worthy of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. No matter how hard the children pulled and tugged, the hammer moved nary an inch.

After learning about dinosaurs at the omni-theatre and a lunch, the children explored the science exhibits where they gain knowledge on various subjects including our Earth, marine life and climate changes. They even got to experience how it felt to be caught in a typhoon in a Typhoon Simulator. Their day then ended on a high note, with a viewing of the movie ‘Ironman 3’.

When 5pm came, the children thanked the volunteers for their time and company by rating them 10 out of 10. A Primary Six child had such a positive experience with his volunteers, that he said, “I’m going to visit after I leave the centre, and maybe volunteer next time,” before wondering, “Can we volunteer in secondary school?”
