COMNET Senior Service trains Befrienders
Organised by COMNET Senior Service under AMKFSC, in collaboration with the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC), Ministry of Health (MOH) and Teck Ghee Active Ageing Committee, 45 volunteers from the Wellness Club at Teck Ghee Community Centre attended a befriending training session to prepare them for house visits.
At the event, COMNET staff shared on the importance of having befrienders in the community, especially for seniors who live alone at home, and the roles of a befriender. At the same time, they also taught the volunteers essential communication skills when engaging seniors. Volunteers also learned of the different resources available in the community, which they may tap on in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
Through role-playing, the volunteers also experienced first-hand how to handle seniors of varying personalities, for example, seniors with dementia, and seniors who may be unfriendly and refuse help.
