BASIC Student Care Centre (Sengkang) learns about STEM
On August 4, 2017 (Friday), 15 volunteers from SIEMENS took time out of their busy schedules to educate some 25 children at BASIC Student Care Centre (Sengkang) on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through engaging and hands-on activities. This project is a year-long programme conducted at all three BASIC Student Care Centres under AMKFSC.
Using everyday materials including cans, rubber bands and straws, the children, under the supervision and guidance of the volunteers, created catapults. Through this activity, they were taught concepts such as stored kinetic energy and projectile motion. The activity then ended on a high note, when the children competed against one another in a shooting match, where the team that hit the most number of plastic cups would win. The children also learned about stability and support through another activity, involving building a structure with straws.
At the end of the day, the children shared that they had enjoyed the session very much because not only were the activities fun and engaging, they also learned new knowledge that was relevant to their students.
